'Silly grandson' enters artwork dear to him

SUNBURY Community Arts Network's John Beasley has already decided on one of the two portraits he is going to enter in the inaugural Boilerhouse portrait prize.

Based on a photo of his grandmother Matilda Jane Johnson, the painting holds special meaning.

"The photo was taken 65 years ago by her silly grandson, which was me," he says.

The Romsey painter said the network had been thinking about having a portrait prize for several years.

"There's not many art shows which have portraits locally. We've been thinking about having the prize and decided this year was as good as ever."

The first prize winner will receive $1000, and the people's choice award recipient $500.

Mr Beasley says the network is striving to get 100 entries.

"We've had lots of inquiries from across the state and Australia.

"We've had a few from local people but would like more local people to get involved."

Entries close on September 14. The artworks will be on display from September 28-October 7 at the Boilerhouse Community Arts Centre.
