Riddell’s Christine Harris was rewarded for an outstanding season under the goal ring as she won the Riddell District Netball League’s Janine Ryan medal on Monday night.
The prolific scorer played a key role in lifting Riddell into this year’s finals series, with 657 goals in the home and away season prior to a haul of 49 in the elimination final at the weekend.
Reigning medallist Rebecca Pereira of Melton Centrals led the count early before missing a large chunk of the season with a knee injury, leaving Harris to race away at the top of the leaderboard.
Wallan’s Kirrily Gilchrist closed to within five by the end of the poll with 23 votes, but Harris was still well clear as the winner with 28 votes.
Melton Centrals’ Mardi Button finished the count in third with 20.
Playing two games a weekend with Riddell and also Bendigo league outfit Gisborne, Harris said she wasn’t exactly sure what had made her stand out in the Riddell league in particular.
The 22-year-old was none the less delighted to win the Ryan medal.
Harris is in her third season of A-grade Riddlell league netball, playing predominantly as a goal attack.
‘‘It’s been because we’ve had a good unit. In a really good team I think we’ve all played pretty well.
‘‘My shooting has been good, I like to read the play, I don’t always follow the ball down the court because that can get crowded.
‘‘It means a lot, this will be motivation to work harder and play even better next year.’’
Harris said she’d been invited to trial with Victorian Netball League outfit Hume City for next year’s Wednesday night competition and was looking forward to the challenge of possibly playing with a third club.
