Sporty grants a touchdown for Sunbury's rising stars

SUNBURY twins Michael and Scott Boyd are among two of the recipients receiving funding courtesy of a Local Sporting Champions Program.

The program, run by the Australian Sports Commission, provides grants to help young athletes with the cost of travel, gear and uniforms for events.

The 15-year-old twins have been rewarded for their achievements in touch football, representing Victoria in the Australian school championships.

The twins are passionate about promoting the little known sport and have recently completed an umpiring course.

Also among the grant-recipients are gymnasts Maddison Schofield and Corey Morton, also of Sunbury.

Schofield, 14, began the sport when she was four and now trains five times a week with her coach.

In October, she came 19th at the Victorian championships.

Morton, who is also 14, is looking at representing Australia in the Olympics after representing Victoria in the national championships.

He trains for 25 hours a week and helps train other boys at Sunbury gymnastics college.
