IT'S all going wrong at Sunbury United as the state league division 3 north-west team tumbled further away from promotion with a 2-1 loss to Hume United at the weekend.
Sunbury has claimed just one point from its last five matches, collapsing to fourth on the ladder with 33 points, two off the promotion places.
A misdirected back-pass late in the match from Sunbury captain Matt Brown gave Hume United's Erdem Koc the chance to score the winner four minutes from time.
Danny Benac had earlier equalised for Sunbury, but also suffered a knee injury which may have ended his season.
Sunbury coach Brendan Lakic said he blamed a mixture of a lack of confidence and bad luck for the slump. "I take losing pretty badly. I'm just scratching my head as to why," he said.
"The main reason as far as I'm concerned is confidence. We've had our best team, but at times what goes on is unbelievable to watch."
Sunbury had the better of the second half against Hume as it hit the cross-bar on four occasions.
"Some of the near misses, you could go on and on, but it was one of those games where Hume United never looked like scoring until they finally did with a gift.
"We have to rely on other results [to win promotion] now. If that's any indication I don't think our chances are good."
Sunbury United finishes its season with games against relegation battlers Essendon United and Lalor.
However, six points from the games will still be no guarantee of regaining a top-two place.
