SUNBURY United coach Brendan Lakic has praised his side's fighting ability after coming from behind to win several matches this season.
Lakic says the side is on track to record a second successive promotion.
United's Victorian state league three north-west campaign got off to a rocky start with just one win from its first four games.
The side suffered big defeats at the hands of Geelong and Yarraville Glory but Lakic said their fortunes changed when they overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 against La Trobe University in round five.
"The boys put in a gutsy performance that day and I really believe it marked a turning point in our season," Lakic said.
"In the next four matches we seemed to get better and better and I could tell we had finally found the right balance."
Sunbury went on to win three of its next four matches with striker Zoran Romanovski, who decided to come out of retirement, the protagonist behind the side's remarkable revival.
"The goals just seemed to fly in when Zoran returned to our forward line," Lakic said.
"He has so much experience and knows how to bring other players into the game."
United is in top spot in the league and Lakic knows he faces a difficult task keeping his side focused on the task at hand.
"We are now the side everyone wants to beat so I doubt it will get any easier for us," he said.
"But I hope the return of striker Dominic Murdaca (suspension) and captain Matt Brown (injury) will help us get across the line."
United travel to lowly Lalor this week. Lakic expects his players will go on the park with a similar attitude to previous weeks.
"You can't underestimate any side in this competition. If we get three wins out of our next five games we'll be a real chance for promotion."
