Stage set for fiery finale

25 Aug, 2009 01:19 PM
THE Riddell District Football League's Melton Toyota Cup premiership is well and truly up for grabs.

Remarkably, all six finalists will consider themselves very much in the race for the ultimate glory.

Top two Riddell and Lancefield deserve to be joint favourites, but not by much.

Third-placed Macedon and fourth-placed Romsey finished just one game behind them and are fired up for a big effort in the finals.

Fifth-placed Woodend-Hesket, which is celebrating a last-gasp entry into the final six, and sixth-placed Diggers Rest are also capable of beating any side on their day.

What an enthralling finals series it promises to be.

Big guns Riddell and Lancefield do battle in the qualifying final at Boardman Reserve in Sunbury this Sunday.

This Saturday's cutthroat elimination finals will feature Macedon and Diggers Rest at MacPherson Park in Melton and Romsey and Woodend-Hesket at Riddells Creek Reserve.

RDFL chiefs are urging fans to pack the terraces for what promises to be an absorbing start to the business end of the season.

The biggest news from Saturday's final home-and-away round was Woodend-Hesket jumping from seventh to fifth.

The Hawks outgunned Melton Centrals after half-time to win by 30 points at MacPherson Park.

Best players were Matthew Stacey, Ben Shipard, Brendan Fennell, David Patterson, Luke Barker and Vincent Braddick.

Shipard kicked three goals, with Fennell, Matthew Knox and Troy Williams chipping in with two goals apiece.

The Sunbury Kangaroos are licking their wounds after missing out on the finals by a whiff of percentage.

They tumbled from fifth to seventh after going down swinging to Romsey by 14 points at Boardman Reserve.

Diggers Rest held onto sixth spot, despite losing to Macedon by seven points at Tony Clarke Reserve.

Reigning premier Riddell would've gained an important confidence boost by keeping the scoreboard humming in its thumping win over Kilmore at JJ Clancy Reserve.

Chris Meacham kicked 10 goals as the Bombers won by 113 points.

Back man-turned-forward Nicholas Ash chimed in with four goals.

Best players were Ricky Elliott, Meacham, Ryan Leitch, Jason Allen, Xavier Codd and Murray McDougall.

Final Melton Toyota Cup ladder standings: Riddell (56 points), Lancefield (56), Macedon (52), Romsey (52), Woodend-Hesket (40), Diggers Rest (40), Sunbury Kangaroos (40), Wallan (28), Broadford (24), Kilmore (20), Melton Centrals (16), Rockbank (8).
