RDFL: Injuries have Sunbury on the hop

22 Jun, 2010 01:00 AM
SUNBURY Kangaroos dropped to third on the Riddell District Football League ladder after they slumped to a disappointing 59-point loss to Riddell FNC on Saturday.

The Roos got off to a good start and dominated the first quarter, scoring 3.3 goals compared to Riddell's 1.1.

The Roos maintained the pressure in the second quarter and went into the half-time break with a promising one-goal lead.

But Riddell refused to give in and scored five quick goals to open up a 24-point lead going into the final quarter.

A number of Roos' players failed to return to the field for the final term because of injury and Riddell took advantage of its chances, kicking another five goals to win 14.14 (98) to 5.10 (40).

Brayden Allen and Trevor Towers were best on ground for the winning side. Michael Allen was also a standout with five goals for the match.

Roos' coach Dean Helmers was frustrated after the match, especially after injuries prevented his side from

achieving an important victory.

"We flogged them in the first half and should have been five to six goals ahead leading into the third quarter," Helmers said.

"We were down to 17-men on the park and we had no options to rotate our midfield."

Despite the loss, Helmers was pleased by the performance of Brenton Sutherland and Jake Powell.

Next up, the Roos face a hard-hitting Macedon side. Helmers hopes his side will bounce back with a win.

"It really depends on how the boys pull up but we might get a boost if Robbie Ellis comes back in to help out our defensive line," he said.

"I'm confident we can beat any side if we play to our strengths."
