Lancefield overcomes stiff challenge

29 Jun, 2010 01:00 AM
LANCEFIELD continued its solid form at the weekend, scoring a gutsy 17-point win against a committed Diggers Rest line-up away from home.

Coach Kevin Fitzgerald was upbeat with the performance in a match that ebbed and flowed on the scoreboard throughout the afternoon.

"I really rate Diggers Rest - they are a really well-coached side, so to go down there and get the points is a fantastic result for us," Fitzgerald said.

"They are certainly a team that cannot be underestimated and have plenty of tall options who can hurt you."

Despite kicking with a strong breeze in the first term, the Burras were unable to gain any scoreboard ascendancy, trailing by a point at the break.

A seven-goal-to-one second term from Lancefield put the result beyond doubt at the major break.

"They had the wind in the first quarter, so to keep the scores close was a pleasing result for us. The game opened up in the second quarter and we were well ahead at half-time."

An inspired fightback from Diggers Rest in the second half enabled it to kick five goals to one, however, it was not enough to ensure victory.

Fitzgerald said the scoreboard in the second half didn't reflect the endeavour his side showed.

"I wouldn't say we were patchy, it was more a case of us still working hard but being unable to execute as well as we did in the first half. I thought our effort was definitely still there."

Thomas Waters, Chris Collins, Travis Smith and Sam Witteveen were among the best for the Tigers, while forward Brian Ruffell was again outstanding, kicking four goals in trying conditions to bring his tally to 29 for the season.

Lancefield takes on Rockbank after the break next week, and looks on track to notch another win.

"Every game is tough, there are no easy games in this competition that really is quite even."
