Cannons to fire for state

29 Jun, 2010 01:00 AM
SEVEN Calder Cannons have been selected for Vic Metro's squad that will compete in the under-16 national championships in Blacktown from Saturday to July 10.

Rory Atkins, Darcy Bailey, Joe Daniher, Liam McBean, Jonathon O'Rourke, Lachlie Plowman and Jake Young will take on Australia's best under-16 footballers.

The selection caps off a big year for the boys after making the Cannons team earlier this year.

All seven players were part of the Cannons team which competed in the state championship program in

April.

From there they were selected in an initial training squad of 50, and then made it through to the top 30 for the final team.

*LADDER leader Riddell's good form has been rewarded with seven players named in the Riddell District Football League's inter-league training squad.

The squad, which will face Springvale on Saturday, will be coached by Shane Geddes for the third time.

Geddes will be supported by 2004 Bowen medallist Alistair Meldrum, Dean Helmers and team manager Gavin Sporle.

Riddell captain James Allen and Gerard Liddell were among the players selected.

Players from 12 clubs have been named in the squad including six each from Romsey and the Sunbury Kangaroos and five from Lancefield.
