KYNETON is celebrating a breakthrough victory after ending a decade-long losing streak against Gisborne.
The Tigers failed to move out of ninth on the Bendigo Football League ladder with a 29-point win but did move level with the Bulldogs on three wins and 10 losses.
Gisborne remains eighth with 63.55per cent to Kyneton's 62.75per cent after the 9.15 (69) to 6.4 (40) result.
A rearguard effort from the Tigers in the final quarter kept Gisborne off the scoreboard in spite of the latter having the wind-assisted end.
Kyneton made the most of the wind in the first quarter to open a 22-point lead, pegged back to 15 points at the long break and 10 at the last change.
James Condos kicked three goals for Kyneton before leaving the game sick in his last appearance before heading overseas.
Wayne Foster was the player who stepped up in the key forward's absence, booting four majors including a crucial goal on the three-quarter-time siren and the sealer in the final term.
Kyneton coach Paul Houston described conditions as some of the worst he'd seen with a howling gale and rain "falling sideways".
"Gisborne pegged the margin back to 10 points in the third term and some doubt started to creep in," Houston said.
"Foster's goal was 40metres out on the run, it was an ugly kick but it went through. Gisborne were coming home with a five or six-goal breeze and we thought we'd be right up against it to hold them out."
Houston dropped two players a kick behind the ball in the final quarter and the move paid off as Kyneton trapped the ball in its attacking half.
Mathew Sciberras played a crucial role in tagging Gisborne ball-winner Casey Summerfield while Robert Trajkovski and Leigh Cook were vital ball winners for Kyneton.
Ollie Messaoudi was Gisborne's best with two goals.
