BRENDAN Fewster will have to be content with a starring role in a TAC Cup premiership with the Calder Cannons after he was overlooked at both the AFL national and rookie drafts.
The 19-year-old from the Rupertswood Football Club was re-admitted to the elite under-18 competition under the 19-year-old rule that permits each club to allow two over-age players in exceptional circumstances.
It was believed Fewster did not have the best opportunity to showcase his talents after being struck down with constant injuries and was welcomed back into the Cannons squad for 2009.
The 196-centimetre, 93-kilogram tall from Monegeeta, who graduated from Salesian College, was one of the stand-out ruckman in his last year of juniors and played a massive part in the Cannons run to the title.
"'Fewy' was always going to be an outside rookie chance," Cannons football manager Len Villani said. "At his height at AFL level, he'd have to play key position and he's believed to be not athletic enough to play at a key position."
However, that common assessment from the AFL recruiters is contrary to the thoughts of the Cannons coaches.
Villani points to Geelong's No.42 draftee Nathan Vardy, the spring-heeled Gippsland Power big man rated one of the best and most athletic ruckman taken at the national draft this year.
"[Fewster] took him to the cleaners," he said, while also
pointing to Fewster's grand final performance. "He got a tap-out, won the clearance and hit someone 50 metres away with a pinpoint kick."
Fewster is likely to sign with Coburg Tigers in the VFL 2010.
