AFL hears final appeal for league switch

13 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
ROLLING Meadows' last attempt to switch from Riddell District Football League to the Essendon District Football League will be heard by AFL Victoria today.

The junior club to the east of Sunbury was denied a clearance from the RDFL last month. The EDFL appealed the decision.

AFL Victoria rejected clearance applications from both Sunbury Lions juniors and Rolling Meadows to join the EDFL but announced a review of the Riddell league competition.

The EDFL last week submitted another appeal against the decision not to let Rolling Meadows join its league.

"It's [Rolling Meadows] a seven-team, juniors only club that is now in its 11th year without seniors," EDFL general manager Marc Turri said.

"We feel it would be a better environment for them to develop their club, away from the existing Sunbury clubs that are more established.

"A transfer to another league and a point of difference make them more attractive... we believe we can leverage that and expedite their development."

RDFL management will also attend the AFL Victoria appeal today, with general manager John Batty reiterating his league's stance that all of its clubs were valued and wanted.

The EDFL annual general meeting took place last week with two new members joining the board and Ian Price retaining his position as president.

Price's board position was up for re-election and he retained it, in addition to running uncontested for the president's position.

Former Oak Park administrator Romy Gutbier is one of the new board members, as is former Maribyrnong Park footballer, assistant coach and North West FM commentator Matthew Pillios.

Pillios spent 2011 on the Northern Football League board.

Glenn Allison retained his board position, while life members Barry McNaughton and Ross Wall retired.
