ELIZABETH Turner and Shine have achieved a lot in their five-year show horse partnership, but their biggest tests lie ahead.
Turner, of South Gisborne, was recently named Equestrian Victoria's show horse young ambassador of the year and will carry the extra responsibility of promoting the discipline in addition to competing in the next 12 months.
The 19-year-old student works closely with 15-year-old gelding Shine at Rob Roy Stud in South Gisborne where the duo are preparing for a busy show season.
Representing young show riders is one of Turner's main responsibilities as the ambassador and she hopes to open the channels of communication between experienced riders and up-and-comers as part of a mentor program.
"Younger riders do get overwhelmed, I'd like to set up profiles for experienced, older riders, and make them contactable as mentors," Turner said.
"Even though we are a sport with individuals competing against each other, we have to work as a community to run our shows."
Shine, whose racing career under the name Hurricane Grey ended when he was six, has so far performed admirably after teaming up with Turner.
The duo have posted a swag of top-10 finishes at Barastoc in the Show Hunter category as well as a range of other awards including titles at the Canberra and Royal Melbourne shows.
Turner's ultimate goal is to compete in the Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout event, held at the Melbourne show each year.
Show riders are judged strictly in areas such as presentation of rider and horse, manners, paces and saddlery.
"I haven't competed in the Garryowen before but I'm entered for this year. It's a very prestigious event."
