Wallan confident after snaring top position

02 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
WALLAN coach Paul Miller says his side deserves the tag of favourites heading into the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade finals series.

The side has secured top spot after the home-and-away season and beaten the second and third-placed sides along the way and Miller says everything is going according to plan. "We have beaten St Anthony's and Diggers Rest Bulla who I think are the best sides in the competition next to us and we have performed well in the last four weeks so at this stage we're very happy.

"We have to go into the finals with confidence but in the end there are four teams in it who will be desperate to win. There are no guarantees in this sport."

Miller will be hoping his key players play to their strengths over the next weeks but is adamant that there are no weak links in his team. "Brenton Hanson is good with the ball and is also regarded as a very good batsman so he no doubt holds a big key in our finals aspirations," he said.

"Andrew Nicholls is also important when he gets big runs on the board as we tend to get a big score when he does it.

"But we don't rely on one or two players and I expect everyone to play their part."

As for his side's potential opponents in the grand final, Miller said there was a 50/50 split between Diggers Rest and St Anthony's who he sees as "both capable of beating anyone on their day".

"St Anthony's are a great bowling side and in Cameron Clayton and Jamie Boldger they have two of the best players in the competition.

"Diggers Rest have an all-round good side and if they're on fire then they are one of the hardest teams to beat."

"We'll have our work cut out trying to win this competition but I think we're good enough to do it."
