McIntyre Cup: Sunbury United halts Riddell

13 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
A FIVE-wicket haul for Sunbury United's James Hughes ensured the McIntyre Cup champion's experience of losing would stop at just one match after a 68-run win against Riddell at the weekend.

Chasing 246 for victory, Riddell was all out for 177 in the 66th over at Langama Park in the top-of-the-table Gisborne District Cricket Association clash.

Sunbury United has 30 points heading into this weekend's one-dayer to end the calendar year, six clear of second-placed Riddell on 24 with a three-way tie for third separated by percentage only for Woodend, Bacchus Marsh and Riddell (21 each).

Riddell could not build a partnership in its top order as regular wickets left it 5-89 and struggling in the chase. When top scorer Cam Clayton (37) fell as Hughes' fifth victim of the day, the visitors were 8-135.

Cameron Moran scored 32 to extend the innings but fell to the only other multiple wicket-taker, Nathan Morse (2-41).

At Romsey, the winless and last-placed team put up a protracted fight against Bacchus Marsh but fell 21 short. Romsey occupied the crease for 103 overs to make 248 in reply to Bacchus Marsh's 8-269 made the previous weekend.

But the lack of a big score to anchor the innings was telling, with only Rowan Stott (45) passing 30. Bradley Nichols took 3-58 to be Bacchus Marsh's best bowler.

At Macedon, the home team snared a second win of the season to move to 15 points, six off finals pace, with a six-wicket win against Ruperstwood.

Chasing 234 for victory, Macedon's Trevor Shipp (81) and Taylor Stevenson (56) made 142 for the first wicket before Chris Axton (47 not out) guided the team to victory in the 79th over (4-235).

Woodend successfully defended 151 by bowling out Wallan for 88, making 1-92 off 20 overs before stumps was called on day two.

In B grade, Gisborne Dragons won by 10 runs against Wallan to stay within a win of the top four.

Jason Lock claimed 4-34 as Wallan was bowled out for 195 in reply to the Dragons' 8-205.
