WOODEND will square off with Sunbury United for the first Gisborne District Cricket Association trophy of the summer this evening in a Twenty20 final at Gilbert Gordon Reserve.
Woodend won its semi-final against Wallan by two runs last week, while Sunbury United advanced from the other semi-final by beating Hesket by 71 runs.
Woodend posted 6-142 batting first in the semi-final against Wallan with Brett Gardner's 71 not out being the key knock. Josh Eastley (3-20) was then the top wicket-taker as Wallan finished its 20 overs 9-140 in reply.
Sunbury United prevented a showdown between Woodend and Hesket in the final by skittling the C grade outfit for 77 in reply to 148.
James Hughes (35), Nathan Morse (28) and Peter Jaeger (21) were top scorers as United was bowled out a ball short of its full allocation.
Adrian Chew was best of the Hesket bowlers with 3-34. But Hesket made a horror start to the chase, losing four of its first five batsmen for a combined two runs.
Chew hit 32 and was the top scorer as Hesket was all out for 77 in the 19th over.
Jessy Carroll's 3-11 was best of the bowling for Sunbury United.
Tonight's final at Gilbert Gordon oval in Woodend starts at 5.30.
