Big win puts Bees on top

09 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
IT has been a game of musical chairs at the top of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup ladder this summer.

When the music stopped after the 12th round, Sunbury United shuffled into the No. 1 ranking with a crushing seven-wicket win over Romsey at Langama Park on Saturday.

Bees' first XI player Peter Jaeger insists his side is not sitting comfortably in what has become a hot seat this season.

"There is still a lot of work to be done," he said.

"We realise it's close and we've got to keep winning.

"If we lose our next two we could be out of the finals."

Finals comes early for the Bees.

They will meet on-the-rise Macedon Cats and defending champions Gisborne Dragons in finals-type matches in the last two home-and-away matches.

Three successive wins will see the Bees go in as favourites against the Cats at Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve in Macedon over the next two Saturdays.

The Bees' latest win over Romsey was quite impressive with player-coach James Hughes blasting a century and his opening partner Rich Parker keeping his wicket intact en route to 67.

All the talk was about the unbelievable form of Hughes, who is averaging more than 129.5 this calendar year after scores of 66 not out, 93 and 100.

"It was a very patient and controlled knock," Jaeger said.

"His batting has come a long way in the past two seasons."

Bees president Rob Hyatt is delighted with what Hughes has brought to the table in his first season in charge.

The all-rounder has not only made 486 runs and taken 20 wickets, but has also been teaching youngsters at the club.
