SUNBURY Jets landed a big blow in the mid-table scrap for positions in Big V Basketball division 1 as they downed Werribee Devils by 13 points on Saturday.
The six-win, eight-loss Jets pegged back a game on the eight-win, seven-loss Devils with the 82-69 victory.
Sunbury sits eighth on the division 1 ladder behind seven-win Whittlesea, eight-win Werribee and nine-win teams Southern Peninsula, Altona and Warrnambool.
The weekend win was set up by a 26-12 opening quarter as the Jets jumped to a double-figure lead and kept Werribee at a safe distance.
Alex Bogart-King was critical with 30 points as he shot better than 60per cent from the field, while Nathan Sellwood also used the ball sharply with his 22 points coming at 75per cent. Sunbury won the rebounds 47-33 and made it count on the scoreboard as it put in 14 second-chance points to Werribee's two.
Sunbury starts the final month of the home-and-away season with an away double header this weekend, starting with Whittlesea at 8.30pm on Saturday night followed by La Trobe University (10th, 4-11) at 1pm on Sunday.
The Lady Jets were also too strong for Werribee on Saturday, beating the winless Devils 77-46.
Sunbury's seventh win of the season keeps it seventh on the ladder with the same tally as Hawthorn, albeit from an extra game played.
The Lady Jets took the chance to spread the game time at the weekend as every player scored and Rebecca Lane (13), Erin Soutter (10) and Leah French (10) all hit double figures.
Sunbury was in control after an 18-7 opening quarter and its 26-8 third term turned the match into a blow-out.
French handed off seven assists to go with her points, while Kellie Down stood tall with 13 rebounds.
The Lady Jets will be tested with Whittlesea (fourth, 10-5) this weekend starting 6.30pm on Saturday at Mill Park Basketball Stadium.
