Youths take pole position

17 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
MACEDON Ranges youth are thriving in an automotive program designed to help disengaged students.

Two former students have returned to Gisborne as mentors to share their knowledge and skills with others.

Pole Position, in its fourth year at Gisborne Secondary College, was initiated by Macedon Ranges youth resource officer Joe Grbac, of Kyneton police, after its success at a Broadmeadows school.

Over 10 weeks, youths learn the ins and outs of mechanical projects, how to use tools and occupational health and safety procedure from Kangan Batman TAFE staff.

Sunbury's Jordan Thomas, 16, who is now mentoring others, said he liked being a volunteer and helping others.

"I like working on cars and I wanted to come back because I get respect. I help anyone who needs help and it's good fun.

Details: Joe Grbac, Kyneton police, 54221377.
