MT MACEDON'S Jenny Davies says Flinders Street station is more than just a station.
She has compiled a book that explores the social, commercial and architectural history of the Melbourne landmark, dating back to its development more than 100 years ago.
Beyond the Facade: Flinders Street, more than just a railway station took Ms Davies two years to complete.
At her son's suggestion, she entered it in this year's Victorian Community History Awards and won the overall title, receiving $10,000.
Inspired to research and write the book by a story about her grandparents meeting in the station ballroom, Ms Davies said the narrative included the stories of many Melburnians over a century.
"I always thought I would write a book or several. But when I first stood on the roof of the station, thanks to a tour by the stationmaster, I looked across in amazement that nothing had been written about the history of the station.
"It was fabulous. I made all these contacts all over Melbourne. I say that 'we' won the history prize, because it's all about their history. I'm just the person who put it all together.
"I feel privileged to have been able to hear their stories."
The book is available at local bookshops.
