A SUNBURY hobby farmer believes petty crime is making Sunbury lose its country feel.
Branko Kovac made the comments after the theft of his motorcycle from a hayshed on May 13.
The 48-year-old said he moved to the country area from the heart of the township with great expectations.
"I thought it would be more laidback, there would be less crime, the kids could walk to school and we would not have to lock doors. But that's all changed," Mr Kovac said.
"It's the first time I've had anything stolen.
"I grew up in the Sunbury town centre and moved further out to escape the hustle and bustle.
"So much for the safety of living in the country.
"I'm more edgy since the theft. Every time I hear a noise, I go check. I think it is someone who knows the area. I live on a 23-acre plot. It is not that easy to get to."
Senior Constable Rebecca Ladek, of the Sunbury police, said residents needed to be vigilant and start locking things up. "I would not say crime is up or down in Sunbury. Security is a way of life."
A Victoria Police spokesman said residents should take precautions to safeguard their property by having locks on doors and windows, alarms and sensor lighting. "Do not leave spare keys or car keys readily available inside the house. Lock up any tools in a shed," the spokesman said.
"Mark your property using an engraver or ultra-violet markers, with a 'V' [for Victoria], followed by your licence number. These markers are available from various electrical stores in Victoria. Marked property is much harder for burglars to resell."
