GISBORNE will host a botanical art exhibition featuring the works of 21 Victorian artists, including three who have received medals from the acclaimed Royal Horticultural Society in England.
Renowned artist and Woodend resident Anita Barley will open the exhibition at 6pm on Friday.
Titled A Fascination with Nature, the mostly watercolour works will feature all things botanical, including roses, insects and other natural objects.
Botanical illustration is an art form that requires significant artistic skill and attention to detail.
Gisborne-based artist Pam McDiarmid, who paints regularly with the other botanical artists at Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens, said audiences would be amazed at the intricate detail in each painting.
"We live in an age when everything is about speed and for the moment, so it is refreshing to see more than 60 paintings that have been portrayed in exquisite detail."
The exhibition will include works by artists Jean Dennis, Sandra Sanger and Mary Gregory.
There will also be botanical illustration demonstrations each day during the exhibition from 10am to 3pm.
The botanical art exhibition is at the Artist's Realm Gallery, Prince Street, Gisborne, until December 6.
