Success earns 'Moving Forward' a lifeline

07 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
A SUNBURY-based program aimed at getting young people back at school or into work has celebrated its first year.

Moving Forward was originally run by Hume Council as a pilot program in Sunbury following its success in Broadmeadows.

The council has now committed to continue it in Sunbury.

Council city infrastructure director Steve Crawley said the young people taking part in the program were disengaged from their school and often from their community.

"It provides practical living skills - such as budgeting, communication and time management - while addressing practical ways to gaining employment, further education and work experience.

"Participants are given a breadth of experiences to help clarify their choices for the future and given space to learn hands-on responsibility and respect for themselves and their community."

Ten young people had attended the Sunbury program, and nine graduated.
