YOUNG people in Hume who are dreaming of a career in aviation or defence can join the local unit of the Australian Air Force Cadets.
The 407 Squadron is looking for young men and women aged 13-18 to join its ranks during a recruitment drive this month.
The unit meets at the Maygar Barracks in Camp Road, Broadmeadows, every Monday night.
Cadets Flight Lieutenant Jennie Brady said the cadets received training needed for a career in aviation or defence forces.
Cadets also learned field craft and survival training and about leadership, citizenship and general life skills.
Lieutenant Brady said the unit had about 70 youngsters in its cadet ranks.
"This gives you the knowledge of what is expected of you if you pursue a defence force career. It helps cadets make an informed choice about whether they want to join."
The training is out-of-school hours and would not interfere with cadets' education, she said.
The cadets also support returned servicemen and women at Glenroy and Fawkner RSL at Anzac and Remembrance Day services.
