School buddies lick first-day fears

07 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
MORE than 850,000 students in Victoria started back at school last week, dusting off their school books for another year.

At New Gisborne Primary School, 465 pupils began the school year, including 87 in prep grade.

Principal Jonathan Lowe said prep numbers had increased from 56 last year.

"All the students have settled in very well," Mr Lowe added.

"We have an extensive transition program in term four, and all the preps and the kinders came to the school a few mornings last year.

"We also have a buddy program at the school where grade6 students pair up with preps to look after them, show them around the school and make them feel comfortable," Mr Lowe said.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said many financial challenges faced families at school time and he reminded parents they could claim some back-to-school expenses.

Under the education tax refund scheme, families can claim up to 50 per cent back on a range of expenses - up to $397 for each primary school pupil and $794 for each secondary school student.
