Romsey teen stays revved up

28 Jul, 2009 11:30 AM
ROMSEY teenager Dion Brillanti has not let several broken bones stand in the way of his dreams to make it in the world of motocross.

The 15-year-old motocross rider competed in the final race of the 250cc class at the Victorian junior motocross championships in Rosebud last weekend. He finished in 2nd place overall after previously competing in races at Ararat and Cobram.

The year 9 Gisborne Secondary College student fell in love with the racing side of the sport only three years ago, though he has been riding bikes since he was five.

"My next-door neighbour got me into it. I won my first race when I was 12.

"I went out and no one knew who I was, so that made me feel I could do anything and [that] motivated me to train and become better at what I love."

He has had a rocky road to success with injuries including multiple breaks to both arms, broken legs, a break to both collarbones and breaking three vertebrae in his back.

"I've had a pretty rough time, but come back stronger. It doesn't worry me much, you have to put it aside and go out and think better and try not to crash," he said.

"My mum gets worried, so does Dad, but they know I will go further with this and support me one hundred per cent."

Dion trains most days doing weights and cycling work and practising on the track in Lancefield.

"My goal is to go on to win the Australian titles later this year and then, hopefully, get on a team for my senior years so I can support myself and earn some money. I love going out there with my mates, having fun and the adrenalin [pumping]. But the best feeling is the winning."

He thanks his coach, parents and friends for helping him reach a higher level.

His father Carlo agreed it had been a frightening journey.

"We ride every bump and hump with him. Mum doesn't come out with him. Her nerves are too bad, but it has gotten easier," he said.

"I know he is very determined. He's not scared to go in and put his body and bike on the line. He's committed and out there and we're very proud of him."
