PREMIER John Brumby was a special guest at the official opening of the Pitruzzello Estate olive grove and vineyard in Sunbury on Friday.
The Consul-General of Italy, Marco Mattacotta Cordella, was among those present.
Pitruzzello Estate was created by Sebastiano Pitruzzello, who migrated to Melbourne from Italy in 1963.
His Pantalica Cheese Company became one of Australia's leading cheese makers.
Thirty-seven years after that business was established, Mr Pitruzzello left his adult children in charge so he could turn his attentions to olives and wine.
In 2002, more than 12,000 olive trees were planted and work began on the development of the 4000-square-metre olive oil processing plant next to the Calder Freeway in Sunbury.
In 2008, Pitruzzello Estate crushed and bottled its first vintage of extra virgin olive oil under its own brand.
This oil won gold and silver medals at the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards. The same year, the estate's first vintage of sauvignon blanc was released.
Pitruzzello Estate opened its doors to the public for the first time last weekend.
The estate features a cafe, cellar door retail outlet, restaurant and conference centre.
