Pile-up blamed on black ice

28 Jul, 2009 04:00 AM
POLICE have urged Macedon Ranges motorists to take care on the roads after a five-vehicle pile-up caused traffic chaos on the Calder Freeway near Gisborne on Friday.

Black ice is believed to be the cause of the accident, which happened before 7am on the south-bound lane of the Jacksons Creek bridge.

Five vehicles, including one tipper-tray truck, were involved, but no one was injured.

Police units from Kyneton, Gisborne, Sunbury and Romsey attended.

Leading Senior Constable Paul Docherty said traffic was diverted through Gisborne in both directions due to the black ice on the bridge and it was reopened after 9am.

He said motorists needed to take care and slow down on all roads in the shire.

"You cannot see black ice, it's not white at all; it looks like normal bitumen. Remember there are no ice warning lights there, but that does not mean there is no black ice."
