A PAIR of contrasting gardens in the Macedon area will be on display as part of the Australian Open Garden Scheme this weekend.
Lewisham in Macedon features streams, waterfalls and small lakes in park-like setting.
Wooden bridges cross streams and link sweeping lawns with wide meandering paths.
Owner Maxine Yates has lived at the residence for 10 years working hard to transform and improve the existing property with box hedges, enclosed garden beds, established deciduous trees, a gazebo flanked by topiary and other garden ornamentation.
"We have done a lot of improvements. The design was there, but it had gone downhill a bit. There has been a lot of work maintaining and improving," she said.
Recent additions in the past 12 months include a new vegetable garden and a lap pool.
"It's a garden that we really feel we are being caretakers for and I hope that whoever takes it over will still love it and look after it like we have," she said.
"This time of year I love the weeping cherry blossoms and crab apples."
There will be wine tastings and visitors are welcome to picnic in the garden.
Also open will be Mount Macedon's Glenrannoch, which is renowned for its trees that frame stunning views to Melbourne.
Stone steps link dramatic terraces with an abundance of flowers including magnolias, mollis azaleas, pieris and early rhodendron.
Lewisham is at Mount Macedon Road and will be open 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Glenrannoch at Devonshire Lane, Mount Macedon, opens 10am to 4pm on Sunday only. Entry is $7 and children are free.
