EARTH-moving works at the Woodend Children's Park are bringing the community-led dream project a step closer to reality.
Woodend Children's Park committee president Kellie Duff said the $500,000 project had been more than two years in the making.
"It's great to see the start of the works. We will really be able to see things come alive now," she said.
"The park is really starting to take shape after two years of planning. Drawings and plans are one thing, but seeing it unfold in reality is very exciting."
She said community support and government grants had enabled the project to proceed. It was now almost double the size it was originally envisaged.
"All of the support has made this happen, not only the money side of things, but also the free labour and in-kind work that is being done," she said.
"Earth-workers have started with Mick White from Michael White Landscaping & Excavations donating his team's services for several days to bring in extra fill, shape the site for drainage, lay trenches and bring in big landscaping rocks. It's amazing."
Ms Duff said locals Steve Rumble of Altitude electrics and Andrew Dean of ADD Plumbing & Gas had also offered in-kind labour for underground electrical and drainage works.
More than 400 cubic square metres of soil has been transported to the site free of charge.
All playground equipment for the site was expected to land in Australia by the end of the month and installed by the end of May.' 'We have some state-of-the-art equipment, some of which has never been installed in Australia before. It's going to be something pretty special," she said.
The park project is expected to be completed by September.
"We hope it will be open and ready to be enjoyed by spring. So it's a very exciting time."
