Panel offers a helping hand

31 Mar, 2009 03:00 AM
ABOUT a dozen people are on the Sunbury's Helping Hand committee that donated $1500 to the Sunbury police and community youth club.

"We're happy to take on more," Bendigo Bank business banking manager Ron Blackmore said.

The independent committee decides how to spend the funds donated by the bank for community grants.

"It's a new community initiative that the bank is involved with ... it was launched last week," Mr Blackmore said.

"The bank contributes 0.2 per cent of new and existing business; customers can opt not to be part of it but doesn't cost anything."

At the moment, that equates to $4500 a month, which has been collected since November 2008.

Sunbury's Helping Hand is still formalising the grants process and will call for applications from community groups towards the end of the year.
