THE Royal District Nursing Service, the largest provider of home nursing in Victoria, began providing its services to residents in the Macedon Ranges last week.
Residents can now access RDNS health-care services and take advantage of the wide range of nursing care on offer, including general nursing, aged, palliative and diabetes care, and continence management.
The RDNS has delivered home nursing and health care across Melbourne for many years but only recently expanded to include regional areas.
Chief executive Dan Romanis said the service would bring a long history of knowledge, research and expertise to the Macedon Ranges.
"We are very excited to be able to add another option to the health-care setting in Macedon Ranges and that we have an opportunity to work with other local health-care professionals to help contribute to people's quality of life," he said.
"RDNS is about delivering first-class nursing care to people in the place where they feel most comfortable, familiar and secure; in most cases that's their home."
He said the goal was to assist people to stay at home longer, remain close to family and friends and reduce the number of visits they made to a hospital.
"Health care today is about providing different options as well as local health professionals, such as nurses, doctors, hospitals and others working together to provide the most effective care to people."
General practitioners, hospital staff or even family members or friends can refer someone to the service. However, residents who feel they need assistance can also refer themselves.
Mr Romanis said the RDNS offered a full assessment service prior to admission. Nurses worked closely with a person's doctor, family and carers.
