LAST Friday, Sunbury Heights Primary School received the first delivery of fruit as part of the healthy eating program titled Free Fruit Friday.
This term, prep-to-grade 2 pupils will enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables once a week from the Sunbury Fruit Market.
School principal Kaye Mills said: "We could pick our own supplier, and staff and local residents have always been impressed with the quality of the produce [from the supplier]."
Free Fruit Friday aims to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables for all Victorian Government school pupils.
It is recommended that young children consume at least one serve of fruit and two serves of vegetables every day.
Free Fruit Friday is expected to provide prep-to-grade 2 pupils with one serve of either fruit or vegetables each week.
The school received a Government grant of $2010 to provide the fruit weekly for the first semester.
Schools will receive a grant twice a year under the program.
Sunbury Heights' grant was calculated using enrolment figures and is based on its number of 146.
