Native garden brings green touch to town hub

24 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
A GROUP of passionate Romsey residents has helped to establish an environmentally sustainable garden at the town's community hub.

The new garden is made up of more than 400 plants which are indigenous to the Macedon Ranges, including candlebark eucalyptus, black she-oak, Dianella, daisies and lilies.

Designed and created by Romsey residents Kerri Mewett and Peter Vale, the garden has been funded by Macedon Ranges Council and supported by the Kangan Batman TAFE Horticultural department.

Ms Mewett, who along with partner Peter teaches horticulture at Kangan Batman TAFE, said the garden was designed to complement the existing building design but at the same time showcase local species.

"The garden, located outside the playgroup and toy library room, has been designed with the children's view in mind and it is hoped it will attract native birds and insects," she said.

"The indigenous species we've selected are suitable to the local weather conditions, frost-hardy, and have low water requirements."

Ms Mewett said she had been watching the redevelopment of the community hub in Main Road and waiting for a garden to appear.

"It didn't, so I offered to make one. It's a high-profile building and it's an important and really terrific facility. We hoped we could complement it with a terrific garden.

"I got the idea from a community noticeboard, next to the building, that had an indigenous panel on it. "
