SUNBURY basketballers and netballers have received a boost with $650,000 state government funding for the Boardman Stadium redevelopment.
The money is in addition to the $4.35 million allocated by Hume Council in its budget for the $5.9 million project.
The community has contributed $227,000 for the stadium redevelopment.
Construction work has started on expanding the stadium from four to six courts.
The redevelopment includes a remodelled entrance and upgraded change rooms, canteen and spectator viewing areas.
Sunbury Jets operations administrator Rick Giannino said the new courts were desperately needed in the area.
"It's huge as we've had to cap competitions for the past three years as we don't have the room.
"We already use every venue in Sunbury we can, but we're still playing matches until 10.30 at night [on weekdays] and 6pm on Saturdays.
"It will give us the scope to be more flexible with how we use the facility."
Giannino said the new courts would also allow the Jets to develop their 'all-access abilities competition'.
He said the Jets were also in talks to hold tournaments at the stadium once the redevelopment was completed.
Netballer Anica Scherer, 15, said the extra courts would mean players wouldn't have to play matches very late.
Badminton is also played at the courts.
Hume mayor Ros Spence said the government funding was a huge win for sport in Sunbury.
"It assists the council to provide facilities and assists the community to get people playing sport."
Sport and Recreation Minister Hugh Delahunty, who announced the funding, said the stadium was home to a huge basketball community.
"The proposed new stadium redevelopment will be the perfect base for SBA [Sunbury Basketball Association] clubs and the Sunbury Jets to develop their players, stage a range of indoor competitions and host the big events."
