 Merger plan gets a tick

Merger plan gets a tick

28 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
A PROPOSED merger of Kyneton Primary School, Kyneton Secondary College and Lady Brooks Kindergarten is a step closer after approval from a feasibility report into the project.

The Kyneton education plan, released last week, proposes combining the three entities into one school from kindergarten to year 12, incorporating early childhood and allied health services.

An independent consultant delivered the recommendations at a joint meeting of the councils of Kyneton Secondary and Kyneton Primary schools and the education plan steering committee, which includes interested groups within the Macedon Ranges.

The feasibility report was requested by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

The report recommended three campuses - kindergarten to grade 4, grade 5 to year 9 and years 10 to 12 - to be co-located on the existing secondary school site in Epping Street and nearby vacant DEECD site.

The option would involve the demolition of a considerable number of facilities at the current secondary school site.

The recommendations are yet to be accepted by either school.

A forum will be held to allow the Kyneton community to get more information about the plan and have their say about it.

Kyneton Secondary College principal Glenn Davey said the report was a step forward for the three education providers.

"We are very excited about the possibilities," he said. "This report gives us some direction and if the recommendations are accepted, we can then start to talk to architects and move it forward."

Mr Davey said the proposed project, which would cost about $24million and accommodate more than 1400 children, was a great opportunity for the Kyneton community.

"We're hoping to create a state-of-the-art, environmentally sustainable education precinct, that will hopefully be attached to a high-quality sport precinct, which will change the shape of the town."

Mr Davey said speculation around the future of the primary school site was expected.

"That's why it is desirable for the community to attend the forum.

"We are gauging community opinion and then the school councils will make a decision whether to accept it."

The forum is at Kyneton Primary School at 7.30pm on May 12. Details: Kyneton Primary School principal Wendy Pearce, 54221855 or Kyneton Secondary College principal Glenn Davey, 54211100.
