LANCEFIELD will be the first town in the Macedon Ranges to officially go 'plastic-bag free'.
An initiative of the Lancefield Neighbourhood House and Lancefield Business and Tourism Association, the new campaign launched last week aims to reduce the consumption of plastic shopping bags in the community by working in partnership with local businesses.
Plastic Bag Free kits will be available to every household in the Lancefield postcode area.
The kits will include a reusable 'Lancefield bag', a second reusable bag donated by the Lancefield Community Supermarket and a key-ring tag that entitles owners to specials and a chance to win a monthly $50 shopping voucher from participating businesses.
Information about the growing problems associated with plastic bags and tips on how to remember to use reusable bags when shopping will also be included.
The campaign is supported by Macedon Ranges Council, Macedon MP Joanne Duncan, the Calder Regional Waste Management Group and Quikey Australia.
East Ward councillor Joan Donovan said the campaign started as a way for local businesses to reduce their impact on the environment.
"Reducing the use of plastic bags is something that the whole town can be involved in," she said.
Residents can collect their kits from various businesses in Lancefield.
