KYNETON Botanic Gardens could become a major drawcard for the town if plans for an upgrade materialise.
A draft plan for the historic gardens is available for public comment. The redevelopment includes a new amphitheatre, a contemporary feature rose garden, upgraded entrances, paths and a community park.
Consultants commissioned by the council in its report say the gardens could be a place "of beauty and horticultural excellence" but have suffered from lack of use and profile, water and funds.
The gardens were established in 1858 and are listed on the state heritage register.
Friends of the Botanic Gardens president Ann Tomlinson supports the implementation of the plan guiding any future works. "I think it's essential to have a plan in existence, so poor decisions are not made on future work. The friends will continue to try and support the introduction of the plans and hopefully support some of the requirements needed."
Kyneton Community Park president Sarah Turner said that for many years the botanic gardens had been under-utilised.
"We're looking for people to use the space, including younger kids, older kids, as a place to come and gather with the family, have a picnic and have a barbecue with seating."
Seniors would also benefit from the park, with the proposed inclusion of items including stretching equipment.
The draft plan can be viewed at www.mrsc.vic.gov.au or visit the council offices in Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend. Submissions are accepted until May 18.
