Jobs grow in Hume, but funding falters

07 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
A SUCCESSFUL jobs program in Hume has ended because of a lack of funding.

The Jobs on the Go program was aimed at increasing local employment opportunities.

Run as part of the Broadmeadows Neighbourhood Renewal Program, it was funded by the Department of Human Services for only 12 months.

The funding ended on January 31.

A DHS spokesman said: "The Jobs on the Go initiative received $24,000 in funding for one year as part of the eight-year Broadmeadows Neighbourhood Renewal program, which ended in June 2011.

"The Jobs on the Go initiative in the Hume region exceeded its target of creating six employment opportunities, instead successfully creating 20 new jobs."

The spokesman said Hume Council was now helping residents find jobs.

"The council is now taking the lead role in working with job and training providers through the local Jobs for Local People strategy.

"This includes the council employing staff to work with employment and training providers, as well as business."

Council director of city sustainability Kelvin Walsh said the program had achieved higher than expected results.

"It assisted a total of 66 residents throughout Hume and achieved a total of 20 employment outcomes, eight of which were for DHS clients."

The Sunbury electrification project was among those which used the service.
