POLICE have charged a 19-year-old Narre Warren man after a pursuit that reached speeds of up to 180kmh ended on the Calder Freeway in Woodend about 3pm last Thursday.
The pursuit began when a police motorcyclist tried to intercept an alleged stolen white Toyota Camry on the Calder Highway at Harcourt about 2.40pm.
Constable Ian Kuster, of the Castlemaine police, said the 45-kilometre pursuit lasted about 17 minutes before police stopped the car using road spikes near Romsey Road in Woodend.
"It was dangerous driving at very high speeds. Several cars were run off road when the car was overtaking in the emergency lane and on the grass," Constable Kuster said.
Seven police units from Bendigo, Malmsbury, Castlemaine, Kyneton and Woodend were involved.
Two 15-year-old female passengers were questioned and released. The 19-year-old man has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, theft of a motor car, evading police, assaulting police, resisting arrest and traffic offences.
He appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates Court on Friday and was remanded in custody to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court tomorrow.
