PLATYPUSES, peregrine falcons and earless dragons are among the creatures that make Sunbury's Holden Reserve a key conservation project.
The site, at the base of Jacksons Hill, also has significant remnant native grasslands, grassy woodlands and scrubland and spectacular geological sites along Jacksons Creek.
"It's an incredibly beautiful area," Jacksons Creek EcoNetwork chairwoman Christina Cheers said.
This Sunday the EcoNetwork is holding a reserve open day, with guides to explain the Aboriginal heritage and lead tours around the 96-hectare site, including recent work by Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria.
Declared a reserve in 1989, the land was an important meeting place for the two Aboriginal clans whose land lay on either side of Jacksons Creek. It contains surface scatters of artefacts and other signs of habitation.
The open day is from 10.30am on Sunday. Holden Flora & Fauna Reserve is at the end of The Strand, Sunbury (Melway 382 F9). A free barbecue lunch will be provided. Details: Christina Cheers, 97441923, email: ccheers@unimelb.edu.au
