Gallipoli tree link

28 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
SUNBURY Primary School marked Anzac Day with the planting of a pine, grafted from a tree at the Canberra War Memorial.

The Canberra pine was grown from a seed from Gallipoli.

Teacher Lee-Anne Watson said the Dogger family had donated the pine to the school after a recent visit to the war memorial.

"The Canberra tree is grown from a pine cone a soldier brought back from Gallipoli.

"We were thrilled about the significant historical link and decided to make a celebration of the occasion last Friday."

Ms Watson said that in the Anzac Day build-up, the school's 317 pupils had studied war history and the importance of keeping the memories of Diggers alive.

"We usually have a remembrance ceremony, but this year it was much bigger because of the tree."
