Funding plan may cause kinder stress

KINDERGARTENS in the Macedon Ranges are well placed to deal with current demand, but that could change with a Federal Government plan to be implemented by 2013.

Macedon Ranges Council provides kindergarten services in Lancefield, Kyneton, Woodend and the Swinburne and Grant Avenue sites in Gisborne.

Kindergartens in Romsey and Riddells Creek are community-run and there are Montessori kindergartens in Gisborne and Riddells Creek.

Council community services manager Brent Allan said the demand for four-year-old places at council-run kindergartens could be met.

There are currently about 250 places for four-year-olds at the council-run sites.

He said it was harder to cater for three-year-old kindergarten demand and there could be "small waiting lists" with about 24 children currently waiting for places in Gisborne and Kyneton.

"Almost all four-year-olds get a spot, sometimes it's not their first choice, but generally it will be in an adjacent town," he said.

Mr Allan said the council-run sites were at capacity and it would need to look at population projections across the shire to make decisions about possible new kindergarten sites that would be built to meet demand, with Kyneton and Gisborne the priorities.

The Federal Government has pledged to fund kindergarten services for an additional five hours a week a child by 2013 in addition to the 10 hours a week funded by the State Government.

Mr Allan said this move would place strains on infrastructure.

The council is involved in a project with the Department of Education which will investigate every kindergarten in the Loddon Mallee region and its capacity to satisfy the new time requirement.
