MEET Caesar: a 90-kilogram Great Dane. Two years old, he is the prized pet and show dog of Woodend's Leanne Radcliffe.
She's hoping Caesar will be a winner at this month's Kyneton and District Kennel Club championship show.
Ms Radcliffe hopes toy dogs and terriers are not able to distract Caesar from winning the championship prize.
Last year, Caesar won the 'reserve dog challenge' at the Melbourne show and 'junior dog class' at Kyneton.
In 2008, he won the 'puppy of breed' category at both the Adelaide and Melbourne royal shows.
In the lead-up to the show events, he is groomed and pampered. But in his 'down time', he leads a fairly lazy, carefree life,
spending time with his seven-year-old Dane companion Jade.
Ms Radcliffe, which has grown up around dogs, says they are her life.
"When you feel a bit down you can give them a pat and tell them all your problems," she said.
"Apart from being a great pet, they are very gentle; they don't bark. They are really part of the family. They're a very smart breed but not hard to train. They are very obedient and easy to show."
Ms Radcliffe says she got involved in dog shows because of the "social aspect".
She has attended Hamilton, Horsham and Adelaide shows and will head to Canberra next year.
"It's more of an aspect to get away with my husband and the dogs. All of our friends are doggy people and that's how we socialise," she said.
More than 1200 entries are expected for the Kyneton show on September 26 at the showgrounds, Mollison Street.
