Electric rail plan on track

09 Mar, 2010 10:43 AM
PLANNING for the electrification of the Sunbury rail is under way, with survey and site investigations expected to begin this month.

O'Donnell Griffin and Laing O'Rourke Electrification Joint Venture, BMD and Arup will join the Transport Department and rail operators V/Line and Metro Trains Melbourne in the venture to extend the electrification of the metropolitan line from Watergardens station to Sunbury station. Transport Department spokeswoman Galang Trieu said construction was expected to begin mid-year and be completed

in 2012. Construction and environmental planning was moving ahead, she said.

Planning and construction companies are consulting with Hume Council about the extension work.

They will have information stalls at the Sunbury Festival on March 20 and at the Festival of Flight celebration in Diggers Rest on March 21, Ms Trieu said.

Residents will have the opportunity to meet project staff and find out more information about the project.

Project representatives are also discussing establishing a site office in Diggers Rest with Melton Shire.
