Bridge's future up in air

17 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
MACEDON Ranges Shire will advertise for tenders to rebuild or replace McCabes bridge at Darraweit Guim.

It shares responsibility for the bridge work with Mitchell Shire.

The bridge has been closed since July8 after a routine inspection highlighted its deterioration.

Residents living in Stockdale Road now have to detour along Romsey-Wallan Road, adding 15-20 kilometres to their journey.

Mayor Rob Guthrie said the main concern was quick access to the area during the fire season.

He said engineers would work with adjoining landholders this week to see if access through a neighbouring property would alleviate these concerns temporarily.

Darraweit Guim resident Andrea Breen, who lives on Stockdale Road and is affected by the closure, said it was a step in the right direction.

"It's a sensible way to go. They are looking to get another 80 to 100 years out of it, so they don't want to have to revisit this again in a hurry.

"Most people are happy with the approach, they just want to see things moving forward.

"We're hoping it [the upgrades] won't take too long, but I'm guessing at least six months."

Cr Guthrie said the council would decide either to upgrade or rebuild the bridge once tender costs were received.
