McCABES Bridge in Darraweit Guim has been indefinitely closed since July 8.
The bridge, on Stockdale Road, provides access between Macedon Ranges and Mitchell shires.
The bridge is also used by the Darraweit fire brigade to travel to fires in Mitchell Shire.
Macedon Ranges Council's assets and environment director, Dale Thornton, says the closure has been a major concern to both shires.
"We are really worried about that and with bushfire season approaching we are looking at alternatives," he said.
"With the bridge closed, some residents in Mitchell Shire will have to wait 20 minutes for the fire brigade. The Darraweit Guim brigade is on our side and only 500 metres away but can't access them."
Mr Thornton says there was no option but to close the bridge.
"Following a routine inspection of the bridge, it was identified its condition has significantly deteriorated.
"We inspect the bridge annually and the decision is based on an independent engineering assessment report, which has highlighted safety concerns and recent degeneration."
The closure means residents will have to use the Romsey-Wallan Road as a detour, adding another 15-20 kilometres to the journey.
Mr Thornton says any solution to the bridge closure will take some time.
"We are hoping to solve the problems as soon as possible, especially with the bushfire season coming up.
"Right now we are looking at at least six to 12 months as we don't have the money that we can access right
now.
"If we can get money from the government and get exemptions, that will speed up the process.
"Otherwise, both shires will need to reallocate funds and go through the whole process of approving everything."
