SUNBURY College is starting fresh this year with a new principal.
Taking over from Peter Hendrickson, Stephen Smith plans to put his energy into making the school the best it can possibly be.
With 31 years of teaching experience, and 10 years in leadership roles, MrSmith has a clear vision for the school's future.
"I want to have as many students as possible completing VCE and moving on to their career path, whether it is tertiary education, apprenticeships or working," he said.
Some of the goals he has set for himself are teaching young people respect, the value of relationships, responsibility, and encouraging them to be the best they can be.
"I want students to aim high and take risks with their education, try new things."
Mr Smith is no stranger to country towns, which was what led him to apply for the position.
"Sunbury appealed to me because I grew up in a country town and wanted to move back to a similar place.
"Country towns are full of tradition and schools are the heart of country towns."
Mr Smith said he would do all he could to become a part of the community.
"I intend to walk around the town and visit the locals so they know who I am.
I would like to form positive links in the wider community."
Mr Smith said parents and community members were welcome to knock on his door if they would like to talk about the progress of the school.
Asked about the Federal Government's controversial My School website, Mr Smith said the data used on the website was insufficient when building a profile of a school.
"NAPLAN is a one-off individual assessment and is not a good basis to judge a school. It is unfair to use one piece of information.
"But there is always room for improvement and we're trying to improve all the time."
