Big brother's giant commitment

31 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
WOODEND'S Andrew Beard has taken on more responsibility than the average 23-year-old.

In 2008, his single mother died suddenly, leaving behind him and his younger brother Dillon, who was only 13 at the time.

Having already moved to Melbourne to study for a finance and economics degree, Andrew moved back into the family home to become a full-time carer for his brother, who had just started year 7 at Braemar College.

Andrew has taken full responsibility for Dillon, including helping him with his study and taking on household duties while travelling daily to Melbourne to complete his degree.

Andrew's selfless commitment to his family was recognised on Australia Day as he was named the shire's young citizen of the year.

Andrew is completing a masters in economics degree at Melbourne University and has begun work on a chartered financial analyst certificate by correspondence while completing an internship in Melbourne.

"I thought taking on the responsibility of my brother would be the best outcome for us," he told the Weekly.

"But it has been a big responsibility in saying that. I have had a lot of help from the community. We're close with about five or six families in the area.

"I have one family who tutors my brother in English, because I'm more mathematical, and another family always cooks one meal a week for us and they have been doing this for four years.

"It was pretty hectic in the first six months, but there have always been people to help me."

Andrew's girlfriend, Kelly Turner, nominated him for the award after someone had suggested it was a good idea.

Because his contributions were involved in his home rather than the community, Andrew said he was "extremely surprised" at winning the award.

But mayor Henry McLaughlin said Andrew was truly worthy of it.

"Andrew is someone we must all take out hats off to. His selfless dedication and commitment to his family is extraordinary and once again that common theme of giving of oneself for the benefit of others exists.

''Andrew has been a leader from an early age and I'm sure will continue to be a role model and pillar of our community."
