A BLACK Saturday bushfire memorial mural will be built at the Kyneton Town Hall.
In an initiative to show the impact of the February 7 fires on the region and the community, a mosaic mural titled Project: Art From The Extended Region (AFTER) will be set on the north-facing wall of the hall.
The mural will consist of individual tiles with a gum leaf image that can be filled with burnt material such as household china from families and residents affected by the fires.
Organised by Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Cobaw Community Health, Helen Macpherson Smith Trust, Arts Victoria, Regional Arts Victoria, and two mosaic volunteer groups, the mural will be dedicated to the many houses and the church that were lost north of Kyneton.
Pipers Creek mosaic artist Kathryn Portelli, who is driving the project, hopes it will offer a central site for commemoration and deep reflection.
"The mural acknowledges our losses on that tragic day, and more importantly, the enormous support from the community that followed," she said.
Ms Portelli said philanthropic donations and State Government bushfire grants had allowed Project AFTER to progress.
Macedon Ranges residents can collect a registration form and donate small household items to be used on the public tiles at Cobaw Community Health Centre and Macedon Ranges Council offices until October 30.
Ms Portelli encouraged residents to make a contribution to the mural.
The Black Saturday Bushfire Memorial Mural will be unveiled at a ceremony on February 7 next year.
